Start of the Semester
1. How do you envision using art in your classroom?
I hope to use art as much as I can throughout my daily lessons. I want art to be a normal part of my students learning process and not a special treat that is only done a few times a month. I currently teach at a preschool and art is incorporated into every lesson. Every time my student's learn a new letter, they learn how to connect that letter to a word through art. For example, during the letter 'O', my three and four year olds made a big 'O' and a little 'o' into a big octopus and a little octopus. For the letter 'H', they made giant H's into horses and houses. I feel as though almost any lesson can be made into an educational art activity. If a student practices what they learned through art, it will become more memorable and relatable. I believe art should be incorporated into the daily classroom as much as possible. It does not need to be complicated or messy for it to be fun and educational.
2. What do you know about integrated learning / integration?
We have been focusing a lot on how to integrate different subjects into one lesson during our methods course. However, I feel as though art has not been addressed. It is so simple to incorporate art into almost any subject so that time does not need to be taken away from any one topic.
3. Rate your comfort level in making art, and discuss.
Uneasy 1 2 3 4 5 Comfortable
I would give my comfort level with making art a 5. I am not a great artist but I love to create new things and encourage children to use their imagination when making a project or drawing a design. Art is something that does not need to be perfect or correct. I do not believe there is a 'right' way to do art as long as the student is following the assignment and putting forward his or her best effort.
4. Rate your comfort level in analyzing and talking about art, and discuss.
Uneasy 1 2 3 4 5 Comfortable
I would give my comfort level with analyzing and talking about art a 3. During my sophomore year, I took an Art Appreciation class where we practiced analyzing and talking about art. However, I am still not extremely comfortable with this aspect of art.
End of the Semester
1. How do you envision using art in your classroom?
I plan to use art in my classroom primarily through integration. I learned many new styles and mediums for creating art that could fit nicely into any lesson plan. I also learned to look at the "Big Idea". I had no idea how beneficial it could be to choose one theme or unit and spread it across to every subject. Children love art and I think adding this element to so many of my lessons will make them memorable and fun for my students. They will develop a love of learning and know that my classroom is a place where free expression is not only accepted by encouraged.
2. What do you know about integrated learning / integration?
I previously thought that integration was simply add an art element, such as a drawing or a painting activity, to a lesson. However, I have learned that it is much more meaningful to the students and the class as a whole if every or the majority of the lessons are tied to a common theme or unit idea. I know that integration is an essential part of successful teaching. By choosing one theme or unit and spreading it across all subject areas will make the lessons and concepts so much more memorable to the students than if each lesson is isolated to its own theme/unit.
3. Rate your comfort level in making art, and discuss.
Uneasy 1 2 3 4 5 Comfortable
My comfort level with making art has not changed much from the beginning of the semester. Although, I would not still not say I am a great artist, I am comfortable with what I create and love making new things. I would like to share my enthusiasm for creating art with my students and would hope for them to be comfortable and proud of their creations, as well.
4. Rate your comfort level in analyzing and talking about
art, and discuss.
Uneasy 1 2 3 4 5 Comfortable
I woud currently give myself a 4 for my comfort level in analyzing and talking about art. I really did not know how to talk about it before we started discussing and practicing VTS in the art museum and in the classroom. Not only did I learn how to talk about art myself, but I also learned how to encourage my students to discuss art. I now know the proper questions to ask and specific ways of asking these questions in order to create a truthful and open classroom discussion.
