How did the studio lesson relate to the given Big Idea?
This lesson related to the big idea of “relationships” in multiple ways. The first relationship was between the art materials we chose to use. For my piece, I chose to use print making. I created a scene on a mat, covered it in ink, and pressed it to construction paper. I made the image of a sun with rain coming down from the border (or clouds). This relates to me because I love the many different aspects of the seasons and the weather that comes along with them. The four different rectangles do not match up because I wanted it to show the instability and inconsistency of the weather.
How might you employ visual art integration utilizing the studio lesson in your own classroom?
I think this lesson could be tied into many different subject areas. The first one that comes to mind is social justice. They could use this to show the relationships between different people and different cultures by using different art mediums and materials. I also think this could be tied into a Science lesson by showing the relationships between plants, animals, etc.

How did the studio lesson relate to the given Big Idea?
This lesson relates to the big idea of relationships because it shows the relationship we have with our “home”. However, it didn’t necessarily have to be the place we grew up in. It could be something that simply reminds us of home (like a holiday or an object) or something like a “home away from home” or a second home. The term “home” means many different things to people so we had the opportunity to choose what we most relate to the word “home”. I chose make my home Germany. I will be living there for two months this summer while I work at an English language camp in Northern Germany. I then wrote “Heim”, which means home in German. Although, I have not lived there yet, I am very excited to call this my new home for a while. I cannot wait to see what relationships I develop with the people there and the culture.

I think this would make an amazing social studies lesson on community. Many students have a difficult time thinking outside of the physical structure of their house when they think of home. I would encourage my students to think of their community and things that remind them of home. This would also be an opportunity for my students to see that not everyone comes from the same type of home and that home means different things to different people.
